Board of Directors

The Board is composed of ten volunteer members. Nine are elected by the Society from its membership and the treasurer is appointed by the Board. Board members serve three-year terms. Three new members are elected each year. You will see that recent unprecedented times called for some term limit extensions but are returning to normal.

Apply today and help shape the future of the Montessori School of Champaign Urbana.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 6, 2026.

Role & General Expectations

Board members actively support and promote the school’s mission, vision, strategic goals, and policies. Members participate in long-term planning and decision-making while maintaining a governance role—avoiding involvement in day-to-day operations, personnel, or curriculum matters. Trustees act in the best interest of the school as a whole, respect diverse perspectives, and maintain confidentiality regarding Board and committee discussions.

Knowledge of the School & Community Engagement

Board members are expected to understand and accurately represent the school’s mission, programs, and goals. Trustees review school policies annually and are encouraged to participate in the life of the school by attending community events, celebrations, and parent education opportunities when possible.

Meetings & Participation

Board members are expected to attend Board, committee, and strategic planning meetings and to prepare in advance by reviewing provided materials. Trustees contribute thoughtfully to discussions, suggest agenda items, work collaboratively toward consensus, and help ensure meetings are productive, respectful, and focused on strategic outcomes.

Fiduciary Responsibility

All Board members share responsibility for the school’s financial health. Trustees are expected to review and understand financial statements and support sound financial management in collaboration with the Treasurer and Finance Committee.

Fundraising & Advancement

Board members are encouraged to make an annual contribution to the school and to support fundraising efforts by participating in events and initiatives when possible. Board participation demonstrates leadership and commitment to the school community.
